Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital has received a generous donation of $35 million from Larry and Judy Tanenbaum. The money will be used to fund research at the hospital’s newly renamed Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, which was renamed in honour of the philanthropists.
“I’m truly honoured to make a gift that can make a difference in our lives and the lives of our future generations,” says Larry Tanenbaum, who is also Chair of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd.
The donation continues the Tanenbaums’ philanthropic support of Mount Sinai. In 2006, the couple donated $25 million to hospital, which at the time was the largest donation ever made to Mount Sinai. The $35 million donation is said by Larry Tanenbaum to be the beginning of a $50 million fundraising campaign, with the goal being to raise enough capital to expand research into maternal and infant health.
“Today Larry and Judy are challenging us to look to our hospital through the lens of what’s possible to ensure that miracles can and will happen through medical research,” said Jay Hennick, Chair of Mount Sinai Hospital.
Mount Sinai’s research institute is one of the top ten medical research facilities in the world. Every year, researchers make ground-breaking and life-saving discoveries, and the Tanenbaums’ donation will allow them to continue this valuable work for years to come.
The Mount Sinai Hospital is one of the primary partners and supporters of the Insception Lifebank cord blood banking program.
