Gift of Life is a bone marrow foundation that facilitates bone marrow and cord blood transplants for those who are suffering from a wide variety of life-threatening diseases like leukemia and lymphoma. Over 160 000 donors are currently in the foundation’s database, but Gift of Life wants even more. Its goal is to have 30 000 new donors in the registry, in order to increase the volume of small contributions and the number of overall potential donors.

The foundation has taken its cause to social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to increase awareness. As part of the campaign, Gift of Life is attempting to create a trending topic out of the term “#1in200”. They hope that the Twitter universe with catch on by retweeting the phrase “1 in 200 Americans will receive a bone marrow, blood stem cell or umbilical cord blood transplant in their lifetime”.

Although the drive is only searching for bone marrow donors, Gift of Life also hopes to spread the word about cord blood banking, and how it can help to save the life of a child who may be suffering from a life-threatening illness.

Already, hundreds of Twitter users have shown their support and the number continues to grow every day. Though the number of donors solicited through this campaign is unknown, one thing is for sure: Gift of Life is undoubtedly spreading the word about cord blood banking and stem cell transplants.
