Cord blood banking is becoming more popular with families around the world, including professional athletes. Chris and Rebecca Judd, renowned as celebrities in Australia, decided to bank their daughter’s cord blood after welcoming their newborn into the world earlier this month.
Rebecca gave birth to daughter Billie Kate on February 1, only five days after her 31st birthday on January 27. The couple is very health conscious, with Chris occasionally suffering from bad knees as a result of his football career. Recognizing the potential benefits of cord blood stem cells, Rebecca chose to bank Billie Kate’s cord blood as a precaution in case a stem cell transplant is ever needed.
“Of course, you obviously hope to never be in a position to have to use it. But ensuring we stored this important cord tissue and cord blood – when you have only one opportunity at birth, made sense.”
This is not the first time the Judds have banked their child’s cord blood. When their son Oscar was born in 2011, the couple learned about cord blood banking from friends of the family, and made the decision to bank Oscar’s cord blood.
By the time of Billie Kate’s birth, the Judds learned even more about the potential therapeutic benefits derived from cord blood stem cells. Banked at birth, cord blood stem cells have the potential to develop into various blood cells that can help provide therapy to people diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, and other blood disorders.
The family has actively shared photos of their newborn and their domestic lives over the last several weeks with followers on social media. Both Chris and Rebecca appear very happy to have Oscar and Billie Kate in their lives.
