The spirit of the holiday season is to instill feelings of giving within people to help the less fortunate. People and organizations around the world are beginning the holiday season with a commitment to give to non-profit organizations with a growing conscientious movement.
The movement is known as #GivingTuesday, an idea that began in New York City, and will be held on December 3. The well-established 92nd Street Y cultural and community centre began the first #GivingTuesday by basing the movement off the saying ‘tikkun olam’ – which means repairing the world.
#GivingTuesday was well-received by organizations across New York, and helped the movement expand to regions around the world. Coordinators of #GivingTuesday announced that chapters of the movement are now in countries as far away as Israel, Singapore, and Australia.
Canada is also one of the nations that embraced the #GivingTuesday mission statement. The date, which follows the Black Friday and Cyber Monday holiday shopping days, caters towards volunteerism and donations that are meant for non-profit organizations. A statement from the Canadian branch of the movement says the follow-up to the holiday shopping days is not a coincidence.
“We have two days that are good for the economy. Now we have a day that is good for the community too.”
Some of the partners sponsoring #GivingTuesday include CanadaHelps, the Canadian Red Cross, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation, who agree with the tagline that #GivingTuesday is “the opening day of the giving season.” Individuals, families, schools, companies, and charities are all invited to participate in #GivingTuesday by getting involved in their own ways.
Join the growing movement that encourages people to care, to give, to help others who struggle to enjoy the holidays – it’s the most wonderful time of the year when everyone can enjoy the season.
