One of the most highly debated pieces of pregnancy advice concerns flu shots – are they harmful or are they safe?  For years, medical professional have been unable to reach an agreement regarding the debate, but a new study proves that flu shots are indeed safe for pregnant women.

According to the Toronto Star, a study by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health proves that flu shots are unlikely to increase an expecting mother’s chances of miscarriage.  The flu has been known to complicate births, and now doctors are willing to give pregnant women a flu shot.  Tests on the vaccine indicate women who have received the flu shot are less likely to give birth prematurely or have babies that are underweight.

“This is the kind of information we need to provide our patients when discussing that flu vaccine is important for everyone, particularly for pregnant women,” says Dr. Geeta Swamy, a researcher at Duke University Medical Center.

The study is considered the largest of its kind.  Between 2009 and 2010, researchers examined over 113 000 pregnant women across Norway.  Canada has had an exceptionally difficult flu season this year, and the study has been welcomed by the medical community.

While the study proves the vaccine is safe, mothers are advised to speak with their doctors before receiving the shot.
