Toronto families and patients can expect to learn more about cord blood banking over the next several months.  Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre announced a new awareness building partnership with Insception Lifebank to provide informative and educational information for all people interested in learning more about cord blood and cord blood banking.

Sunnybrook is one of the largest trauma centres in all of Canada, and also operates one of the country’s most accredited maternity hospitals.  The hospital maintains three major locations around the Greater Toronto Area, providing medical care to one of the most ethnically diverse communities in the entire world.

The multi-ethnic population in Toronto as well as across all of Canada can potentially reap a number of benefits from cord blood.  Canadians who are visible minorities or born of mixed heritage are significantly underrepresented in transplant programs like the Canadian Blood Services’ OneMatch Stem Cell Network.  Cord blood banking is an alternative option that can potentially provide new hope for people who need it.

Cord blood is currently used to provide therapy for over 75 life-threatening illnesses and medical conditions including leukaemia, cerebral palsy, and heart disease.  Cord blood banking is becoming more important as medical researchers uncover new ways to provide therapy for patients once thought to have incurable medical diseases.

Dr. Michael Julius, Vice President of Research at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, is looking forward to the cord blood awareness campaign with Insception Lifebank.

“We did a substantial amount of research prior to the decision, and concluded that the experience, competence and credibility of Insception Lifebank made the partnership an ideal fit.”

Sunnybrook also issued a press release about the new agreement, which provides more insight as to how the partnership was struck.
