The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) held its 9th annual meeting in Toronto last week.   The ISSCR is an independent, nonprofit organization established to promote and foster the exchange and dissemination of information and ideas relating to stem cells and to promote professional and public education in all areas of stem cell research and application.

In particular, the ISSCR has taken steps to protect patients, and their families, from stem cell clinics which provide unproven therapies.  The ISSCR stresses that patients have the right to know as much information as possible about a clinic’s procedures, the science that supports it, the costs, the expected outcome and any possible risks. The ISSCR has created a very useful patient handbook  with information to help patients evaluate stem cell treatments they may be considering.  Stem cell therapy offers such great potential to cure some of today’s incurable diseases in the near future.  Clinics providing unproven and ineffective therapies will only impede the development of effective stem cell therapies.  The ISSCR is doing a tremendous job educating the general public about stem cell research and guiding patients through their decision to undergo stem cell therapy!

If you are interested in learning more about stem cells, then check out their web site (https://www.isscr.org), it is a great resource for anyone interested in learning more about stem cells.
