Johnathan He, a brave six-year old from Milton Keynes in England, will meet a number of celebrities at the 2013 WellChild Awards. The young boy was selected from a pool of hundreds of young children as the Inspirational Child of the Year. Johnathan will receive his award on September 11 at the Dorchester Hotel in London.
Johnathan was diagnosed with a rare form of chronic granulomatous disease, spending long periods of time in and out of hospitals receiving treatment. Doctors are attempting a cord blood stem cell transplant as a new form of therapy, which could potentially provide Johnathan with an improved quality of life.
But regardless of how difficult his condition has been, all of Johnathan’s doctors are amazed at his positive outlook and ability to remain smiling regardless of the situation. One of Johnathan’s doctors Helen Braggins, who is a clinical nurse specialist caring primarily for children with CGD, was the one who nominated the six-year old for the Inspirational Child award. She cites Johnathan’s optimism as an example for everyone.
“Johnathan has an amazing ability to turn a bad situation into a new adventure. When caring for other children I often find myself thinking ‘what would Jonathan make of this?’ He is a truly remarkable young man.”
The WellChild Awards are a notable event featuring many celebrities who support the WellChild mission. Past attendees include rock singer Rod Stewart, comedian Russell Howard, and even a touch of royalty in Prince Harry.
Johnathan will share the stage with this year’s attendees, and is himself expected to put on a very entertaining show.
